When healthcare professionals were asked which innovations will have the biggest impact on healthcare in 2026, AI-enabled diagnostic confidence came out on top, selected by 47.7% of respondents. But perhaps the more interesting finding sits right behind it.
Mental health ranked second, with 40.7% of healthcare professionals identifying it as one of the most important areas for innovation in the year. While these may seem like two separate trends, the findings suggest they are more closely connected than they first appear.
What can AI take away?
The conversation around AI often focuses on what the technology can do. But healthcare professionals seem to be asking a different question: What can AI take away?
Across the survey responses, clinicians highlighted the need for tools that reduce administrative burden, simplify workflows, support decision-making, and free up time for patient care. The value of AI isn't in adding another system to manage; it's in removing some of the pressures that already exist.
That's where the connection to mental health begins.
Mental Health and AI Are Part of the Same Conversation
Mental health ranked as the second most important healthcare trend for 2026, but the findings suggest healthcare professionals are viewing the issue through a broader lens.
Alongside the need for better mental health services and improved access to care, respondents highlighted challenges affecting healthcare professionals themselves, including increasing workloads, administrative pressures, legal concerns, and a lack of time.
Many clinicians see AI as part of the solution. Whether through documentation support, streamlined workflows, or reduced cognitive load, AI has the potential to reduce some of the daily frustrations that contribute to stress and burnout.
The findings suggest healthcare professionals are looking for practical solutions that fit naturally into workflows, reduce pressure, and create more time for patient care. In that sense, AI and mental health are not separate priorities, but part of the same goal: making healthcare work better for both patients and providers.
